Cheney Stadium Murals
Getting rid of the gray.
In the Pacific Northwest there are eight months of gray, overcast skies. So the last thing you want in a fun, festive, stadium environment is more of that. At Cheney Stadium we decided to wrap the concrete walls of the seating bowl, party decks, tunnels and dugouts with colorful murals to enhance the fan experience from every angle in the park. Designed and illustrated from scratch to feature landmarks of the South Puget Sound area, the murals became a important addition to this classic ball field.
With the 2016 season featuring sellout after sellout, the front office was looking for new spots for unique fan experiences. So someone had the idea to move the visiting team bullpen and use the original as a brand new party area. Here you were watching the game through the left field fence right at grass level, and you could watch home pitchers warm up, just feet away.
The original home plates and turf remained in the space, so I thought it would be cool to create a photo opportunity for guests replicating the view from the Cheney Stadium mound – but as a life-sized, 16-bit video game. Inspired by the background characters in Street Fighter 2 and Ken Griffey Jr. Major League Baseball, this mural was created as pixel art in the appropriate dimensions for that authentic Super Nintendo feel.
