Five years after we established the model for a modern tiki bar menu, it made sense to revisit it and give the loyal Hidden Harbor patrons something new.
After seeing my work on menus for Tiki Tatsu-ya and Inside Passage in the intervening years, Hidden Harbor owner and creative mastermind Adam Henry tasked me with making the “the best tiki bar menu in the country.” To me that meant something that leapt out at you from the bar top, felt special in your hands, and presented all the incredible HH food and drinks in a tantalizing way. It also meant we wanted to saturate the whole thing with pages of bold, colorful illustration.
We created a visual narrative of an island adventure starting beneath the sea, emerging onto the beach, and exploring the tropical setting until the sun sank beneath the waves. These backgrounds were a unique challenge to ensure all the content remained clear and legible in a dim, bar environment. The center of each spread includes a tiki carving by legend Crazy Al Evans, that also appears in the bar.
A oversized, wraparound, die-cut cover features the bar’s unofficial Jaguar Shark mascot, while the inside cover includes a special spot for a postcard promoting upcoming events.
This may be my magnum opus of tiki menus … until my next one, of course!
